Episode 12: A Moment for Thankfulness

One big guess as to what we're thankful for this year.

It's YOU! It's an honor to have the freedom to speak to you all each week. We are so humbled by those of you who have left reviews, Facebook posts, Instagram messages or sent us texts to encourage us along this podcasting journey.

You have no idea how much your support means to us. It's a little daunting to put your thoughts and voice into the internet sphere – to spend so much time thinking of topics, recording episodes, editing audio and drafting show notes and wonder if anyone is out there listening.

As we've learned, all roads lead to thankfulness. And we'd be remiss if we didn't thank you for celebrating girlfriend therapy with us.

In This Week's Episode

  • We discuss our families, and how we're thankful that they know oftentimes too much about us and still have choose to love us.
  • Brett drops some Regina George-level meanness about Amy Schumer.
  • How gratefulness can help with your physical and mental health.
  • How this year's election results has kicked us into high gear as far as changing the world on an individual level.
  • Brett gives a quick lesson in grammar.

That's What She Said:

  • "I almost pulled a Buddy the Elf in the middle of the mall." -Brett
  • "This has more than ever caused us to love bigger." -Sarah
  • "I never thought I'd be this crazy of a dog person ever." -Sarah
  • "Do you have a favorite food item for Thanksgiving?" "Does pie count?" -Brett

Episode Eleven: Comparison

Compared to other weeks, this episode was a bit more difficult.

But, we did it. We completed the episode even with the large amount of election-brain we suffered from last week. In a world where we are inundated with social media, it’s hard not to notice this week’s topic creeping up in life more often. We are surrounded with pretty pictures and success stories of our peers, after all.  This week’s podcast is about comparison - why we do it and so much more. We hope you'll join us as we jump back in to another deep topic, but not to worry, there are some laughs along the way.

While you're at it, do you mind rating and reviewing us on iTunes? And don't forget we're on Stitcher and Google Play as well!

In this week's episode:

  • Brett and Sarah talk right up front about social media and comparison and a few reasons why the self-discipline of refraining from social media might help, but is very difficult.
  • They tackle the concept of “grass is greener,” contentedness, the origin of comparison, why we do it, advice on combatting it, if comparison is a difference of male vs female thinking and the positive aspects of comparison.
  • Brett and Sarah both make some confessions about comparison.
  • This podcast episode and this podcast episode.
  • The Dad Bod. 'Nuff said.
  • Our Thanksgiving thankfulness challenge.

That's what she said:

  • “You get to something or you achieve something that is comparable to other people who you have looked up to in the past for doing, and you’re like “eh, no, let’s look over here. That person is doing this next thing and I need to be doing that. It’s like a never ending cycle and we’re always so focused on the next and if the grass is greener really on the other side.” -Sarah
  • “So, comparison definitely lives online, but it is not born online. It is born within us.” -Brett
  • “You have to be given a healthy dose of it so that you’re not like, lazy. I think there is a reason for it.” -Sarah
  • “There are snapshots of people we see that are more idyllic than the drudgery of our daily lives.” -Brett
  • “I’m learning as I get older that listening is key. I have not spent enough time in my life listening to others.” -Sarah
  • “That’s the number one thing that I would ever hope from this podcast. That someone would listen to us and say ‘oh you too?'" -Brett

Episode Ten: Our Final Fours

Why so serious?

Whew! We have ten episodes under our respective podcasting belts. Count 'em. TEN. We've gotten seriously deep in a lot of these episodes, so we thought we'd throw in a fun topic to keep things fresh – isn't that what girlfriend therapy is about?

We think yes!

In this week's episode:

  • Four things we wouldn't change about ourselves. To follow up on our last episode on self confidence.
  • Brett confesses her Netflix adultery.
  • Four of our most binge-worthy shows (besides the obvious).
  • The girls call to stop the podcast ASAP and watch this episode of How I Met Your Mother.
  • Brett gives her best impression of Buddy from Cake Boss.
  • We realize our favorite television shows incorporate food.
  • We discuss four fictional characters we'd love to open a bottle of wine with.
  • We introduce the #FriendshipChallenge to finally get New Girl into Sarah's life.

That's What She Said:

  • "America's Test Kitchen. Mind-blowing to me." -Sarah
  • "Don't you take that goat cheese away from me." -Brett
  • "It's like NPR for your face." -Brett
  • "We love Guy Fieri, mainly because he's the worst." -Sarah
  • "Our pillow talk needs some work." -Brett
  • "Bella from Twilight, just so I could slap her and be like, 'girl. Get your life together.'" -Sarah
  • "I hope Target has a really good charity program, because they take all my money." -Sarah

Episode Nine: Self-Confidence

Building self-confidence, brick by brick, can take years.

There are plenty of articles out there with advice on how to build it, use it, hack it and more. But, it doesn't always come easy to everyone. Plus, there's a fine line between confidence and arrogance. So how do you know when you're crossing it? When you're on the verge of being "over-confident?"

Sarah and Brett dive into this deep topic opening up about their own struggles and experiences. The consensus? They're still working on it.

We hope you enjoy this discussion and that you can relate to it in some way. Don't forget to rate and review us on iTunes and follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

In this episode:

  • The girls dive into what it means, how to reconcile it with narcissism and how to find that nice balance in your life between feeling confident and having a healthy opinion of yourself.
  • They talk how self comparison is made easier by social media. Also, this selfie study.
  • Brett renames a classic chick flick.
  • Brett and Sarah talk arrogance and the differences between men and women’s approaches to self-confidence. Also, they reference this awesome episode of the Around the Table Podcast.
  • This article from The Atlantic about self-compassion.
  • Things get sassy.
  • Brett and Sarah each discuss what advice they’d give themselves for when they’ve been at their least-confident state.
  • There’s a public service announcement about voting. Go exercise your right!
  • They share stories from where over-confidence bit them in the butt.
  • And they wrap up everything using some advice from this article.

That’s what she said:

  • “Hope you brought your floaties!” -Sarah
  • “It’s a lot about changing and loving and not being entirely so reliant on what other people think of you either.” -Sarah
  • “That is self-confidence to me; not just being sure of who I am or my personality or my looks or how I come across to people, but actually who I am at my deepest level.” -Brett
  • “I thought I would have had a lot of this shaken down and been on this path and knew what I wanted and I’m still kind of very unclear about what it is that I’m going to end up doing with myself later.” -Sarah
  • “An ‘Eat Pray Love’ journey.” -Brett
  • “If you said something mean to me, you got moved to position six.” -Brett
  • “I am gonna double tap that jank like you would not believe.” -Brett (about liking a picture on Instagram ;))
  • “We’re Leo and Kate still on the boat.” -Sarah
  • “I’m like over-dose sassy right now. I think I’ve had too much Dr. Pepper.” -Brett
  • “Sometimes you have to get knocked on your butt a little bit…” -Sarah
  • “I feel like the answer to a lot of the conversations that we’ve had at this table, the answer seems to be thankfulness, no matter what.” -Brett
