Episode Five: Forgiveness

Can we be completely honest with you?

Forgiveness is a struggle. No matter how many times you do it, it never seems to get easier. And not only is forgiving others difficult, but accepting forgiveness can be just as hard. Maybe recognizing some of the obstacles that prevent us from easily offering forgiveness can help us in the future.

Because let's face it...forgiveness is something we will have to provide and accept over and over again as we make our way through this life. And it helps to know our loving God continues to forgive us repeatedly as well. This week we're diving deep into this topic, and we hope you'll listen along and chime in with some thoughts of your own on Instagram and Facebook.

In this episode:

  • We make a Hamilton reference within the first few minutes, so just trust us on this one, listen to this
  • Brett and Sarah explore all things forgiveness: what prevents us from forgiving, how we accept forgiveness and how we forgive ourselves.
  • They draw from their own struggles and experiences with forgiveness
  • Sarah references this article.
  • Brett and Sarah discuss their thoughts on grace and God’s forgiveness.

That’s What She (or He) Said:

“Forgiveness is not about forgetting, it’s about letting go of my right to hurt you for hurting me.” -Jim Wood

“If you fail to forgive people from your past, it can come and haunt your future.” -Brett

“That forgive and forget mentality has never been easy for me to adopt.” -Sarah

“Forgiveness isn’t this blanket statement where you just wave your magic wand and hold out your hands and say ‘I forgive you.’” - Sarah

“I think if it starts affecting your present, and your scorecard keeps getting marked with little tick marks on it, then I think that is more telling of you, the person who needs to bestow forgiveness, than the person who has wronged you.” -Brett

“Forgive…and don’t forget it’s active. Forgive and don’t forget you have to do it every day.” -Sarah

“Where does putting up a blockade in order to become healthy hinder you from being more like Christ?” -Brett

I think one of the hardest parts of asking for forgiveness is not necessarily the ask, which can be uncomfortable and very sad or scary, it's understanding that once they’ve forgiven you, trusting them that they’ve forgiven you.” -Sarah

“Forgiving myself is really hard which means accepting forgiveness is really hard.” -Brett

“I mean, I’ve said some shiznat…” -Sarah
